Brewing a New Blend: Earning Differently Before Retirement

ways to make money once retiredAs I get closer to retirement, I’ve noticed something—money feels different now. It’s not just about earning enough to cover the bills, it’s about creating a little cushion, a little freedom, and maybe even a little adventure.

The idea of alternative income used to sound intimidating—like it belonged to tech geniuses or people with fancy degrees. But the truth is, it can be as simple as turning your skills, hobbies, or life experience into something that earns a little extra.

I’ve met people who sell handmade crafts online, teach piano lessons from their living room, rent out their RV when it’s not in use, or write e-books about things they’ve been doing their whole life. Some do it for the challenge, some for the income, and some just to keep the mind active.

For me, it’s about planting seeds now so I can enjoy the harvest later. I want work that feels lighter, more flexible, and—if I’m lucky—fun. Something I can carry into retirement without it feeling like a “job.”

The beauty of this stage in life is that we already know ourselves pretty well. We know what we’re good at, what we enjoy, and what we never want to do again. That’s a pretty great place to start when building something new.

If you’re looking for inspiration, here are a few ideas I’ve seen friends try:

  • Freelance consulting in your area of expertise.

  • Online tutoring in a subject or skill you know well.

  • Selling handmade crafts at markets or on Etsy.

  • Pet sitting for neighbors or through an app.

  • Renting out a room, RV, or vacation spot for extra cash.

  • Virtual assisting for small business owners.

  • Seasonal work at events, festivals, or farmers’ markets.

  • Writing or blogging to share stories and earn ad or affiliate income.

  • Photography for portraits, events, or stock image sites.

  • Hosting workshops in cooking, gardening, or a craft you love.

The best part? None of these require you to give up your freedom—or your coffee breaks. It’s about creating a new blend of work and life that’s just right for you.
