Good morning!
Now that we’ve shared a mug and a moment together, I thought it was time to talk about the “why” behind this journey—my personal retirement goals. And spoiler alert: it’s not just about the numbers in a bank account (though those matter too).
For me, retirement isn’t some far-off dream of sitting on a beach doing nothing (though I wouldn’t say no to a good beach day!). It’s about building a life I genuinely enjoy waking up to every day—without the constant hustle, stress, and clutter (both physical and mental).
So today, I want to share with you the three big areas I’m focusing on: Financial, Lifestyle, and Emotional goals.
1. Financial Goals: Keeping it Simple & Realistic
Let’s start with the practical stuff. I’m not aiming for a yacht or a second home in the mountains. My financial goals are simple:
- Have enough savings to comfortably cover my living expenses. I’m working on beefing up my retirement accounts, catching up where I can, and making sure my essentials are covered.
- Reduce monthly expenses. Downsizing my home and simplifying my life means fewer bills. I’m focusing on paying off lingering debts and avoiding new ones.
- Create a small “fun fund.” I want a little cushion for travel, hobbies, and those spontaneous “treat yourself” moments.
I’m not chasing “early retirement” or some magic number. I’m working toward financial freedom that feels achievable and sustainable for me.
2. Lifestyle Goals: Simplifying to Amplify Joy
This one’s close to my heart. Over the years, I’ve realized how much stuff, commitments, and noise clutter up life. My lifestyle goals for retirement are all about simplifying:
- Downsize my home to something cozier and easier to maintain.
- Declutter my belongings—keeping only what’s meaningful or useful.
- Focus on daily routines that bring me peace—like morning walks, slow breakfasts, and time for creative hobbies.
- Spend more time outdoors. Nature is therapy for me, and I want more of it in my life.
It’s not about living with nothing—it’s about living with what matters.
3. Emotional Goals: Finding Purpose Beyond Work
Here’s the piece that often gets left out of retirement planning: the emotional side.
For years, my schedule, my sense of purpose, and even my identity have been tied to work. Stepping away from that will be a big shift. So I’m setting goals to:
- Cultivate hobbies that bring joy without pressure. Reading, writing, maybe even dabbling in art or gardening.
- Nurture relationships. Spend more quality time with family and friends—being truly present.
- Find ways to give back. Whether it’s volunteering or simply being a supportive friend, I want to stay connected to my community.
- Practice mindfulness and gratitude daily. Retirement isn’t about “what I lose” (a job title, a schedule)—it’s about what I gain (freedom, time, peace).
Why I’m Sharing This
I know I’m not the only one navigating these waters. Maybe your goals look a little different. Maybe you’re ahead of me in some areas or just starting out. Either way, I believe there’s so much value in sharing our journeys—the messy, honest, in-progress version.
I’ll be revisiting these goals often because (let’s be real) they’ll probably evolve along the way. But having this “big picture” helps me stay grounded and focused.
Let’s Chat!
What are YOUR biggest goals for retirement? Are you focusing more on finances, lifestyle, emotional shifts—or a little of everything like me?
Feel free to share in the comments (or just reflect quietly with your morning mug). We’re in this together.
Until next time,
Tammie J.
